As HOSA Advisors and Health Science Educators across the nation prepare students for HOSA’s International Leadership Conference, I’m delighted to highlight the invaluable role of National Geographic Learning | Cengage’s DHO Health Science textbook. DHO seamlessly bridges classroom learning with competitive environments, aligning effortlessly with health science standards and 12 HOSA events, encouraging student participation in competitions.
For my underclassmen navigating the world of HOSA and Health Science classes, DHO has proven to be a crucial reference, especially for the 12 HOSA events that list DHO as a recommended resource. These events, such as Medical Math and Human Growth and Development, are fundamental concepts in health science classes, and allow students to further apply their knowledge.
As students progress through high school, I can utilize MindTap resources, such as detailed skills rubrics for various Health Professional Events, including Dental Science, Medical Assisting, Physical Therapy, and Respiratory Therapy. These rubrics have been crucial in aiding both students and educators who may not be as familiar with event specifics.
Furthermore, as Career and Technical Organizations (CTSOs) gain traction at the middle school level, DHO remains a versatile and reliable resource. This year, I had a middle school student who wanted to compete in Medical Math, despite not being enrolled in a Health Science class. She was able to utilize DHO as a study resource on her own through MindTap before engaging in practice sessions with high school peers.
The HOSA Future Health Professions organization not only offers students a platform to demonstrate their knowledge, apply for scholarships, but also to network with educators, healthcare professionals, high school students, and global partners. As an advisor, the relationships I’ve built over the years with my HOSA members is priceless. I am grateful to National Geographic Learning | Cengage for providing a versatile resource like DHO, which allows me more time to build these relationships rather than navigating multiple resources for each competition.
I’m excited for the new 10th edition of DHO Health Science, which promises to be a cornerstone for foundational Health Science education and HOSA competitive events, further enhancing student success.
