Founded in 1991, the National Consortium for Health Science Education (NCHSE) is a collaborative network of secondary and postsecondary educators and industry professionals and leaders. Originally serving as the career cluster advisory committee for health science, NCHSE continues to provide national leadership to advance quality health science education.
This collaboration led to the development of the National Health Science Standards (NHSS)—a nationally validated set of standards that establish clear expectations aligned with industry and higher education. These standards ensure students are equipped with the essential knowledge and skills common to all health professions, supporting college and career readiness.
NCHSE urges the adoption and implementation of the National Health Science Standards and the NCHSE Certificate Program to help address the growing national shortage of healthcare workers. As health science students prepare for the workforce or postsecondary programs, their expectations and learning outcomes should not vary across state or district lines. A strong, standardized foundation in health science education is critical to building a well-prepared, future healthcare workforce.
NCHSE proudly recognizes our long-standing partnership with National Geographic Learning | Cengage, a trusted leader in health science education resources. Since the first edition of the DHO Health Science textbook was released in 1980, it has been thoughtfully aligned with the National Health Science Standards (NHSS)—making it a go-to resource for educators across the country. This alignment has provided a strong foundation for student success in both academic and career preparation.
The connection to the NHSS is clearly highlighted on the Instructor Companion Site, helping educators seamlessly integrate the standards into their instruction. NCHSE is deeply appreciative of National Geographic Learning | Cengage’s continued support of our mission to establish a nationally consistent model for health science education.
Congratulations on the release of the 10th edition of DHO—an enduring and valuable resource for health science programs nationwide!
